Cawthorne Roman Camp

Cawthorn Roman Camps is a well-preserved Roman military site 6 km north of Pickering in the North York Moors, dating to the late 1st-early 2nd century AD (c. 80-120 AD) [1] [2] [3]. The earthworks comprise two forts and an unusually shaped temporary camp: Camp C has an elongated coffin-like shape [1] [2] [3] [4]. Once thought to be practice works, recent reassessment suggests military occupation as part of a network controlling northern England [2] [5].
