Calcaria

Calcaria was a Roman settlement at the crossing of the River Wharfe on the road from Danum (Doncaster) to Eburacum (York), in what is now Tadcaster, North Yorkshire. Named from the Latin for lime kilns, reflecting the area's valuable Magnesian Limestone quarrying industry, the town served as a staging post and river-port dispatching stone to York. Archaeological finds include Roman coins discovered in churchyard graves, pottery, and burial sites, though no visible structural remains survive. The settlement's identification as the Calcaria of the Antonine Itinerary is supported by its position approximately 10 Roman miles from York.
