Nine Maidens Stone Circle

The Nine Maidens, also called the Seventeen Brothers, is a Bronze Age cairn circle on Belstone Common on northern Dartmoor, Devon, England. The circle has an internal diameter of approximately 7.6 m (25 feet) with stones up to 0.9 m tall, though originally there may have been around 40 stones. It is classified as a ring cairn or kerb cairn that once enclosed a burial chamber (kistvaen), since robbed. Local folklore claims the stones were maidens turned to stone for dancing on the Sabbath. The site lies on the Michael Line, a ley line passing through St Michael's Mount and Glastonbury Tor.
