North Tawton

North Tawton is the site of the Roman fort Nemetostatio in Devon, England, whose name combines Celtic 'nemeton' (sacred grove) with Latin 'statio' (road-station), suggesting it was built near a druidic sanctuary. The Claudian-era fort (c. AD 43-54) measured 185m by 120m, covering about 5.5 acres, garrisoned by a cohort of 500 auxiliary infantry. The complex includes two marching camps, multiple fort phases, an annexe, and evidence of a civilian bathhouse, with finds extending to the 4th century AD. This unusual association of military enclosures makes North Tawton an exceptionally significant Roman site in Devon.
