Mowsbury Hill

Mowsbury Hill is a 2.8-hectare Scheduled Monument and Local Nature Reserve in north Bedford, England, containing one of only 10 univallate hillforts in Bedfordshire. Archaeological trenching in 1971-72 revealed a single ditch approximately 4.3m wide and 2m deep encircling the spur, with a timber-framework bank that had burnt down, leaving impressions in semi-fired clay; a human skull fragment was found in association with the destruction. The roughly oval plan measures 290m by 200m. In medieval times, it became a moated settlement identified with the Manor of Morinsbury, mentioned in documents before 1465.
