Danbury, Essex

Danbury is a village in Essex, England, built on a hilltop 112 metres above sea level that has been occupied for some 12,000 years. The summit preserves the remains of an Iron Age hill fort dating to approximately 600-300 BCE, whose oval enclosure bank is still visible today. Earlier Neolithic activity is attested by flint tools and grinding stones found at nearby Twitty Fee, while Bronze Age occupation is evidenced by tools, weapons, and a gold diadem. Romano-British pottery and hypocaust remains indicate continued settlement after the Roman conquest of 43 CE.
