Clare, Suffolk

Clare is a market town on the River Stour in Suffolk with evidence of human habitation spanning from the Paleolithic to the present. Clare Camp, featuring impressive double ditches covering 2.9 hectares, has Iron Age origins confirmed by late Bronze/Early Iron Age postholes found during school rebuilding in 2009. Roman finds include a boundary ditch, coins, sepulchral urns, and a bronze figurine of Mercury. A programme of 33 archaeological test pits was excavated in 2011 funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund.
