Castle Knowe, Northumberland

Castle Knowe, also known as Clinch Castle, is a multivallate Iron Age hillfort in the Cheviot Hills of Northumberland, about 1.6 km south-east of Ingram. The fort summit measures approximately 75 metres by 60 metres, defended by three roughly concentric ramparts formed by scarping the natural slope, standing up to 2.8 metres externally. The outer and middle ramparts merge on the steep western side. An original entrance on the east side features slightly inturned rampart ends. Remains of seven or more roundhouses survive within the enclosure. The fort is part of a dense concentration of Iron Age settlement in the Breamish Valley, with contemporary hillforts visible on Old Fawden Hill and Chubden Hill. It is a scheduled monument.
