Rudchester Mithraeum

Roman temple dedicated to the god Mithras at Vindobala, an auxiliary fort on Hadrian's Wall in northern England. First discovered in 1844 when a farmer uncovered a statue and five altars. Excavated by J.P. Gillam in 1953, who identified two successive temples dating to the late 2nd or early 3rd century AD. The shrine measured 12 x 6 metres with a central nave flanked by low benches, typical of Mithraic temples. An inscription records dedication by Lucius Sentius Castus, a centurion of the Sixth Legion. Not currently visible to visitors.
