Dere Street

Dere Street was a major Roman road running north from Eboracum (York) to the Antonine Wall in Scotland, serving as the primary route for Roman military communications and supplies to the northern frontier [1]. The road crossed the Stanegate at Corbridge and passed through Piercebridge, where it crossed the River Tees [1]. Portions of its route are still followed by modern roads including the A1(M), the B6275 through Piercebridge, and the A68 north of Corbridge [1].
