A Roman fort in Gamesley near Glossop, Derbyshire, first built in turf and timber c. AD 78, then rebuilt in stone c. AD 120 under Hadrian. Constructed by the First Cohort of Frisiavones assisted by Iberian Celts from Braga, the fort covers 3.5 acres in the standard playing-card shape with ditches, stone walls, and flanking gate towers. A mansio and native vicus settlement lay nearby. The fort was abandoned in the mid-2nd century when Derbyshire garrisons were withdrawn.
