Fin Cop

Fin Cop is an Iron Age hillfort in Monsal Dale, Derbyshire, constructed between 440-390 BC. The fort featured a defensive wall 4 metres wide and 3-4 metres high with a single bank and outer ditch. Excavations in 2009-2010 uncovered a mass burial of women and children in the ditch, the first such segregated Iron Age burial in Britain. Researchers estimate dozens or even hundreds of individuals remain buried in the unexcavated portions of the 400-metre ditch, evidence of a violent assault that destroyed the fort before its completion.
