Navio Roman Fort

Navio Roman Fort overlooks the confluence of the River Noe and Bradwell Brook at Brough-on-Noe near Hope, Derbyshire, England. First built c. AD 73 during Agricola's governorship as a timber fort covering 2.25 acres, it was abandoned and later rebuilt in stone during the Antonine period (c. AD 158) by the First Cohort of Aquitanians, with a six-foot stone wall and triple-ditch defensive system. The fort served the Roman lead-mining operations in the Peak District. A centurial stone and inscriptions document its military history, including possible destruction around AD 196-197. The fort and its associated vicus (civilian settlement) are a Scheduled Monument.
