Castleshaw Roman Fort

Castleshaw Roman Fort was a 1st-century AD Roman fortification in Britannia, located on Castle Hill overlooking the Castleshaw Valley at the foot of Standedge in Greater Manchester [1]. Constructed c. AD 79, the fort operated until the 90s AD before being replaced by a smaller fortlet built c. 105 AD around which a civilian settlement grew [1]. The site may have served as a logistical and administrative centre before abandonment in the 120s [1]. While unverified, scholars have suggested Castleshaw could be the location of Rigodunum, a major Brigantian settlement [1].
