Alfred's Castle

Alfred's Castle is a small Iron Age hill fort in Oxfordshire, located behind Ashdown Park in the civil parish of Ashbury. Situated 2–3 km south of the Ridgeway, it was established in the 6th century BC within earlier late Bronze Age linear ditches [1]. The site features a large cropmark enclosure shown by excavation to be contemporary with the smaller enclosure [1]. Protected as a Scheduled Ancient Monument, the hill fort sits at grid reference SU277822 in a natural bowl overlooked by surrounding hills [2].
