Bincknoll Castle

Bincknoll Castle, or Bincknoll Camp, is a scheduled monument near Wroughton in Wiltshire, England, occupying a triangular promontory on the escarpment beneath the Ridgeway. Steeply contoured sides provide strong natural defenses, with only the southern approach offering easy access. The motte measures approximately 52 metres in diameter by 3 metres high, with a ditch 2.3 metres deep. While sometimes classified as an Iron Age univallate hillfort, this attribution is unproven -- pottery found on site has been Roman or later, and the visible earthworks suggest a Norman motte-and-bailey castle.
