Segsbury Camp

Segsbury Camp is an Iron Age hillfort on the crest of the Berkshire Downs near the Ridgeway above Wantage, Oxfordshire. The univallate fort features a rampart bank standing 3m above the interior, an external ditch approximately 20m wide and up to 7m deep, and a sarsen-faced rampart similar to nearby Uffington and Alfred's Castle. Excavations in 1996-97 revealed periodic occupation from the 6th to 2nd centuries BC, with evidence of timber roundhouses, raised granaries, and large storage pits, suggesting it served as a communal centre for sheep management and exchange rather than a purely military stronghold.
