West Woods

West Woods is a 2,000-acre area of managed woodland near Marlborough, Wiltshire. In 2020, a landmark study published in Science Advances by the Universities of Brighton and others confirmed that 50 of Stonehenge's 52 sarsen megaliths were chemically sourced from West Woods. The site contains Neolithic polishing stones used for finishing stone axes, quarrying pits where sarsens were shaped, and evidence of human activity from the Mesolithic onward. The individual sarsens weigh 10-30 tonnes and stand up to 7 metres tall.
