The Lion Gate is a monumental entrance to the Butrint acropolis in Albania, originally constructed in the 6th century BC with large carved limestone blocks [1]. It derives its name from the famous relief sculpture on its lintel depicting a lion devouring a bull, a scene characteristic of Archaic Greek art [1]. During the Classical and Hellenistic periods, it served as one of the main access points to the acropolis from the northern bay [1]. The gate visible today is not the original Archaic structure but rather a medieval reconstruction, likely dating to the 13th-14th century, which incorporated the ancient spolia and relief into its design [1]. The site reflects successive phases of occupation and rebuilding spanning from the 6th century BC through the 5th century AD [1].
