Hadrianopolis (Epirus)

Ancient Roman city in the Drino Valley near Sofratike, Albania, founded by Emperor Hadrian during his visit in AD 125 on the site of an earlier Hellenistic settlement of the Chaonian tribe. The city covered approximately 16 hectares in a grid-pattern layout and featured a theatre with a 58-metre diameter cavea seating 3,500-4,000 spectators, plus public baths with hypocaust heating. A landslide in the 1970s first exposed the ruins, and systematic excavations began in 2005 as part of a joint Italian-Albanian-UK project. Justinian I later refounded the city as Justinianopolis in the 6th century.
