Albanopolis

Albanopolis was an ancient Illyrian settlement identified with the archaeological site of Zgerdhesh, southwest of Kruje in central Albania. Founded in the 4th century BC, it reached its peak in the 3rd century BC before being abandoned after the Roman conquest in the 2nd century BC. Powerful walls stretching 1,400 metres enclosed the town, with an acropolis occupying nearly a third of the site. The geographer Ptolemy recorded the Albanoi tribe here around AD 150, possibly linking it to the origin of the name Albania.
