Albania5th c. BC – 10th c. AD: Pogradec Castle is a ruined fortress perched 205 metres above Lake Ohrid in eastern Albania[1][2]. It was continuously inhabited for over 1,500 years, from the 5th century BC through the 10th century AD[2]. The ancient Romans knew the nearby lake as Lyhnidos, meaning "Lake of Light"[2]. After the 10th century, residents descended to settle closer to the lake's shores[2].
