AlbaniaFounded around 600 BC by Greek colonists from Corinth and Corcyra in southern Illyria, Apollonia grew into a major city on the Vjose River near the Adriatic coast. Its harbour could hold a hundred ships, and it prospered from the slave trade, agriculture, and asphalt exports. A renowned school of philosophy and rhetoric attracted the young Augustus before he became emperor. The city declined after an earthquake silted up its harbour in the 3rd century AD. Designated an archaeological park in 2003, it is on Albania's UNESCO tentative list.
