Chesters Bridge was a Roman bridge carrying Hadrian's Wall across the River North Tyne at Chollerford, Northumberland, adjacent to the cavalry fort of Cilurnum. Built in two phases, the first (AD 122-124) carried the Wall on eight massive hexagonal stone piers spanning 200 feet. A larger replacement bridge was constructed c. AD 192 featuring four elegant arches to carry the Military Way, and incorporated a waterwheel and construction crane. The eastern abutment remains are among the most impressive masonry structures surviving on Hadrian's Wall.
