The Goatstones

A Bronze Age four-poster stone circle near Ravensheugh Crags in Northumberland, 4 km north of Hadrian's Wall in the parish of Wark-on-Tyne. It consists of four squat stones no higher than 80 cm set in a 4-metre square. The smallest stone bears 13 cup marks, making it the only recorded four-poster stone circle with cup marks in England. Within the circle are traces of a low mound thought to be remains of a stone cairn predating the circle, possibly a Bronze Age burial site. The name derives from the Saxon 'gyet stanes' meaning 'wayside stones'.
