Knag Burn Gateway

The Knag Burn Gateway is a 4th-century gateway built into Hadrian's Wall at the point where the wall crosses the Knag Burn, just east of Housesteads Roman Fort in Northumberland. It is one of the few gates through the wall that was not part of a milecastle or fort, constructed to allow trade traffic through when the north gate of Housesteads was closed. The heavily defended passage allowed controlled movement for trade, family visits, livestock tending, and military patrols into the territory north of the wall.
