Margus - City

Ancient Roman city of Margus situated on the right bank of the Great Morava River near its confluence with the Danube, in the Roman province of Moesia Superior [1]. A military camp was established in the late 1st century AD, briefly hosting Legio IV Flavia [2]. In late antiquity, Margus served as a crucial Danube river crossing point. In 434 AD, Byzantine and Hunnic envoys met at Margus for treaty negotiations [1]. The city was captured and destroyed by the Huns in 441 AD [1]. Archaeological excavations have revealed late antique baths and partially explored Roman, early Byzantine and Gepid necropolises [1][2].
