Tašmajdan Park

Tasmajdan Park in Belgrade, Serbia sits atop ancient Roman limestone quarries used from the 1st to 4th centuries AD to supply building materials for Singidunum (Roman Belgrade). The name derives from Turkish tas (stone) and majdan (mine). The quarrying created an extensive network of underground tunnels and catacombs, later used as a cemetery (1826-1886) and a German military bunker in WWII capable of sheltering 1,000 soldiers. Declared a cultural monument in 2021.
