Zemun

Zemun, now part of Belgrade, Serbia, has been inhabited since the Neolithic period (4500-3000 BC), with early residents living in dugouts that gave the settlement its name. The Celtic Scordisci founded the fortified settlement of Taurunum around 85 BC on the Gardos plateau overlooking the Danube. After Roman conquest, Taurunum became a port city and seat of the Danube Roman fleet (classis Flavia Pannonica), serving as a fortified trading town on the route to Constantinople. The Celts built the first fortifications, followed by the Romans, while surviving wall remnants date to the Middle Ages.
