Gamzigrad

Late Roman fortified palace complex near Zajecar in eastern Serbia, built by Emperor Galerius beginning in 298 AD and named Felix Romuliana after his mother Romula. The UNESCO World Heritage Site (inscribed 2007) features two fortification systems with 20 polygonal towers, monumental gates, and walls preserved over six metres high. The compound includes two palaces, temples, thermal baths, and elaborate mosaics depicting Dionysus and Medusa. On nearby Magura Hill lie the mausoleums where Galerius and Romula were ceremonially cremated and deified. Geophysical surveys revealed extensive settlement complexes spanning over 40 hectares beyond the fortifications.
