Cave of Gabrovnica

The Cave of Gabrovnica near Knjazevac in eastern Serbia contains the only known prehistoric cave paintings in the country. Discovered in 1997 by researchers from the Belgrade Faculty of Philosophy and the Knjazevac Homeland Museum, the cave holds five black charcoal drawings: two horses with riders, a horse with a dagger above its neck, an irregular circle, and one unclear figure. Dating to 3,000-4,000 years ago at the transition from the Bronze Age to the Iron Age, the dagger type depicted helps confirm the chronology. One horseman drawing was damaged by vandals with a sharp object in 2018.
