Aiadava

An ancient Dacian settlement in southeastern Serbia, later rebuilt as the Roman city of Remesiana on the Via Militaris between Naissus and Serdica. The Roman fortification featured an irregular rectangular plan with polygonal towers. Within its walls, archaeologists found a civil basilica with semicircular apse; outside lay a three-nave basilica with baptistery and a necropolis. Saint Nicetas of Remesiana (c. 335-414), who evangelized local Thracian tribes, served as bishop here. The site is now beneath modern Bela Palanka.
