Remesiana

Remesiana was a Roman city located beneath modern Bela Palanka in southeastern Serbia, established during the reign of Augustus (12-14 AD) as part of the province of Upper Moesia. Positioned on the Via Militaris between Naissus and Serdica, it became a major early Christian center under Bishop Nicetas (330-410 AD), who translated the Bible into the Bessi language. Archaeological excavations have revealed fortress walls with polygonal towers, multiple basilicas with baptisteries, and over 25 graves with jewelry and coins. The site was declared an Archaeological Site of Great Importance in 1987.
