Sycurium

Sycurium was an ancient town of Thessaly in the Pelasgiotis district, at the foot of Mount Ossa near the western end of the Tempe valley. During the Third Macedonian War (171 BC), King Perseus of Macedon encamped here and launched a failed nocturnal arson attack against Roman supply stockpiles. The site features an acropolis with 5th-century BC fortifications but no confirmed perimeter defenses of the lower town. A Roman-era bath complex with hypocaust heating and mosaics (2nd-3rd century AD) was excavated nearby in 1990, indicating habitation until approximately 640 AD. The site is located near modern Neromylo Ayias in Larissa.
