Demetrias

Demetrias was a major Greek city in Magnesia, ancient Thessaly (east central Greece), located at the head of the Pagasaean Gulf near modern Volos [1]. Founded in 294 BC by Demetrius Poliorcetes, he relocated populations from eight cities—Nelia, Pagasae, Ormenium, Rhizus, Sepias, Olizon, Boebe and Iolcos—into the new settlement [2]. The city quickly became strategically important and served as a favored residence of the Macedonian kings [3].
