Pigi Athinas

Pigi Athinas (Source of Athena) is an archaeological site at the eastern foot of Mount Olympus near Platamonas, Greece, with evidence of human presence from the early 7th millennium BC. A Neolithic settlement with successive occupation phases was established, yielding finds including a female figurine. During the Bronze Age (c. 1620-1500 BC), a monumental tumuli cemetery was created with circular and elliptical burial mounds containing 17 individuals aged 20-50, interred with pottery grave goods. The tumuli expansion is associated with the spread of Indo-European peoples from the Eurasian steppes to the Balkans. Rescue excavations began in 1999 under the Greek Ephorate of Antiquities.
