Grave Stele of Dexileos

The Grave Stele of Dexileos is a marble funerary monument commemorating an Athenian cavalryman who died fighting Sparta in the Corinthian War of 394 BC [1]. Carved from expensive Pentelic marble and standing 1.86 metres tall, it features a high relief sculpture of a horseman in battle, with an inscription below recording Dexileos's birth and death dates [1]. Discovered in 1863 at the Dipylon cemetery in the Kerameikos district of Athens, it was found in situ but relocated during World War II and now resides in the Kerameikos Museum [1]. The stele is attributed to the "Dexileos Sculptor" [1].
