Archaeological Site of Pnyx

Rocky hill less than 1 km west of the Acropolis where the Athenian democratic assembly (ekklesia) met from as early as 507 BC, making it one of the earliest known sites of democratic governance. A carved stone bema served as the speakers' platform where Pericles, Themistocles, and Demosthenes addressed citizens. Three construction phases span the 5th to late 4th century BC, after which assemblies moved to the Theatre of Dionysus.
