The Prison of Socrates

The so-called Prison of Socrates consists of rooms carved into bedrock on the Hill of the Muses (Philopappos Hill) in Athens. The preserved structure contains three interconnected chambers with doorways on the eastern side and a cistern at the rear. Beam-holes indicate it was a multi-story dwelling rather than an actual prison; scholars believe Socrates was held at the State Prison near the Agora. During World War II, the chambers were sealed behind concrete to protect antiquities from the Acropolis and National Archaeological Museum from looting; the wall was not removed until 1999.
