Themistoclean Wall

The Themistoclean Wall was completed in 479 BC under Athenian statesman Themistocles following the Persian Wars. Built with spolia from destroyed temples and statues due to the urgency of construction, the wall stretched approximately 8,500 metres with a height of 8-10 metres and thickness of 3 metres, featuring at least 13 gates including the Dipylon and Sacred Gates. It bisected the Kerameikos cemetery, incorporating funerary sculptures into its structure. Remnants are visible today at the Kerameikos archaeological site and beneath the Divani Palace Acropolis hotel.
