Kerameikos

Kerameikos (5th–6th c. BC) was the ancient potters' quarter of Athens, located northwest of the Acropolis [1]. Its name derives from keramos (pottery), giving English 'ceramic' [1]. The area encompassed both intra- and extramural sections, straddling the Dipylon Gate along the Eridanos River [1]. It housed the city's principal cemetery, where lavish funerary monuments and sculptures lined the Sacred Way to Eleusis [1].
