Sanctuary of Aphrodite Urania

The Sanctuary of Aphrodite Urania was located north-west of the Ancient Agora of Athens and dedicated to the goddess Aphrodite under her epithet Urania [1]. The sanctuary was identified through excavations in the 1980s and initially consisted of a marble altar built around 500 BC that was gradually buried as ground levels rose [1]. Around 100 BC, a structure possibly serving as a fountainhouse was constructed to the west of the altar [1]. In the early 1st century AD, an Ionic tetrastyle prostyle temple was erected north of the altar, closely modeled on the Erechtheion's north porch [1].
