Achilleion, Thessaly

Achilleion is a Neolithic settlement in Thessaly, Greece, dating to approximately 6400–5600 BCE, making it among the earliest Neolithic sites in the country [1]. A Greek-American team excavated the site in 1973–1974 under the direction of Marija Gimbutas, who published the results in 1989 [2]. Four occupation phases (Achilleion I–IV) were defined based on stratigraphy, radiocarbon dates, and analysis of over 100,000 pottery sherds, covering about 800 years of early to classical Sesklo culture [3].
