Ancient Theatre of Fourvière

The Ancient Theatre of Fourviere is a Roman theatre in Lyon, France, built on the hillside of Fourviere in the ancient city of Lugdunum[1]. The theatre was constructed in two main phases: the original structure was built around 15 BC, possibly under Emperor Augustus, with a diameter of approximately 90 metres[2]. At the end of the 1st century or beginning of the 2nd century AD, the theatre was significantly expanded, reaching a diameter of 108 metres and increasing its capacity to approximately 10,000 spectators[1][2]. The theatre was positioned against the hill, below its summit, placing it near the centre of the Roman colony[1]. This expansion made it one of the largest Roman theatres in Gaul and a major cultural venue for the ancient city.
