FranceAutun (ancient Augustodunum) was founded during the Principate era by Emperor Augustus as the Roman capital of the Gallic Aedui tribe, replacing their earlier oppidum at Bibracte. The city featured monumental architecture and may have housed 30,000–100,000 residents in Roman times.
