Nyons

Nyons is a commune in the Drome department of southeastern France, originally settled in the 6th century BC as Nyrax by a Gallic tribe, possibly the Segusiavi or Sequani. Hecataeus of Miletus mentioned Nyrax around 500 BC in his writings on the Celts, making it one of the earliest recorded Gallic settlements. The ancient name may derive from the Celtic Noviomagos, meaning "new market". The town's medieval Nyons Bridge over the river Eygues, completed in 1407, features a single span of 40.53 metres, remarkable for its era.
