Vaison-la-Romaine

Vaison-la-Romaine, ancient Vasio Vocontiorum, is one of the most extensive Roman archaeological sites in France, located in the Vaucluse department of Provence. The two main excavated areas, Puymin and La Villasse, reveal grand patrician homes including the 2,000 m2 House of Apollo with elaborate mosaics. A 1st-century Roman theatre seating 6,000-7,000 spectators was unearthed in 1912 by Abbe Sautel. A still-functioning single-arch Roman bridge spans the Ouveze, and the Theo Desplans Museum houses over 2,000 artefacts from prehistoric through Gallo-Roman periods.
