Robin Hood's Butts

A group of Bronze Age round barrows on the Blackdown Hills near Otterford, Somerset, scheduled as ancient monuments. The barrows include bowl and bell types, with diameters ranging from 28 to 88 metres. Local folklore claims Robin Hood and Little John used the mounds for archery practice or quoits; an 1818 account in the Gentleman's Magazine described impact marks from treasure-seekers' digging. The name appears on an 1844 tithe map. The linear barrow cemetery is a rare example of its class and forms part of a larger Bronze Age funerary landscape on Brown Down, preserving archaeological deposits and environmental evidence.
