Dumpdon Hill

Dumpdon Hill is an Iron Age hillfort near Honiton in Devon, occupying a striking 260m-high detached hill between the River Otter and Luppitt Brook. The triangular fort encloses 2.6 hectares, defended by two substantial ramparts and ditches on the vulnerable northern approach and single ramparts on the east and west sides, with a single inturned entrance on the northeast. Unusually, the site provides rare archaeological evidence for the constructional processes of Iron Age defensive circuits. However, limited excavations found no signs of interior occupation, suggesting the hillfort may have been neither completed nor fully settled. The summit is owned by the National Trust and is designated a Scheduled Ancient Monument.
