Moridunum, Axminster

Moridunum was a Roman fort and small town in Britannia, located at Woodbury Farm south of Axminster, Devon, England. The square fort was built in the 2nd century AD at the junction of the Fosse Way and the Dorchester-to-Exeter road, with its defensive ditch still partly visible. A civilian settlement grew nearby, featuring a large stone mansio for the Roman postal service. The town became a centre for pottery production in the 3rd century and was occupied until the late 4th century before reverting to farmland.
